The 2.5L Inline-5 engine by Volvo was manufactured in an array of versions and models from 1991 to 2016. This engine guide will focus on the B5254T3 variant.

This engine found its way into a variety of vehicles, including several Volvo models and some Ford models such as the Focus, Mondeo, Kuga, and S-Max.

The B5254T3 is the well-known engine present in the Mk2 Ford Focus ST225 and RS. It is a straight-5 engine, part of the Volvo Modular engine family.

The B5254T3 engine by Volvo is a 2.5-liter straight-five engine featuring an 83mm bore and a 93.2mm stroke.

With a 9.0:1 compression ratio, this turbocharged and intercooled engine delivers a power output of 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp) at 5000 rpm and 320 N⋅m (240 lb⋅ft) of torque from 1500 to 4800 rpm.

The engine uses CVVT technology and is controlled by the Bosch ME 9.0 engine management system. The turbocharger is integrated with the exhaust manifold, which is a departure from previous designs.

Ford adapted this engine for their use, with power outputs ranging from 220 PS (217 bhp) to 350 PS (345 bhp) and designations like “Duratec-ST”, “Duratec ST”, and “Duratec RS”.

Mk2 Ford Focus RS Engine Modifications The B5254T3 engine was revised and customized for use in the Ford Focus RS between 2009 and 2010.

These engines were not used in any Volvo models but were specifically designed for the Ford Focus RS. They were configured as an RNC version of the S60R/V70R B5254T4 engine.

Some notable changes included:

  • a lower compression ratio through the use of different pistons
  • strengthened connecting rods
  • camshafts with the same geometry as the B5254T4 engine but with distinct (dual) VVT units
  • a slightly larger Borg-Warner K16 turbo with an integrated manifold

Nonetheless, it did not outperform the K24 used in the B5254T4 S60R/V70R engine.

These modifications improved the engine’s performance in the Ford Focus RS, allowing for higher power output.

The Kuga 2.5T had varying Euro standards, with 2008-2010 models adhering to Euro 4 and 2011-2012 models complying with Euro 5.

The Australian Ford Kuga was equipped with the B5254T6 engine from 2008 to 2011.
